MAYVILLE, N.Y.:-- The Chautauqua County COVID-19 Response Team continues to meet regularly in order to monitor and coordinate its local response to the COVID-19 pandemic. As vaccinations have been ongoing across the country, the team comprised of Chautauqua County Executive PJ Wendel, Public Health Director Christine Schuyler, Sheriff Jim Quattrone, Emergency Services Director John Griffith, and County Medical Directors Dr. Robert Berke, Dr. Michael Faulk, and Dr. Brian Walters issue the following update and joint statement:

“Chautauqua County residents have done a great job adhering to New York State and CDC guidelines to prevent the spread of COVID-19, leaving our local infection rate one of the lowest in the region for much of the pandemic. However, following the holiday season we are experiencing the sharp increase in cases that others across the state and nation are seeing. With this increased level of community spread, we must all continue to adhere to disease prevention guidelines, such as social distancing, wearing masks, washing hands, and avoiding gatherings. At the same time, we must shift our focus to an effective community vaccination strategy.

The County of Chautauqua is prepared to work together to get all groups within our community vaccinated as quickly as the vaccine arrives to us from New York State. The goal is to get the vaccine out with “shots in arms” in accordance with New York State guidelines and regulations as quickly as possible but we need our citizens to please be patient. The Health Department, along with the support of the Office of Emergency Services and the County Medical Directors, has the expertise and experience necessary to implement its mass vaccination plan and administer the COVID-19 vaccine at various identified locations in the County Unfortunately, there are many more people eligible to receive vaccine than there is vaccine supply. At the local level, we have no say in how much vaccine we get or when we get it.  We can assure you that as quickly as vaccine arrives, points of dispensing will be announced.
