DUNKIRK, N.Y.:-- Earlier this year, the Chautauqua County Food Policy Council launched its interactive Food Systems Asset map to help community members and organizations navigate and understand the sectors of the County’s food system.  Meant to connect and identify gaps in the food system, this asset map has gained attention nationwide.

Alongside Johns Hopkins University, Colorado State University, and Ohio State University, the Chautauqua County Food Policy Council was recently featured on a webinar panel hosted by the Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future.  Panelists demonstrated the opportunities, challenges, and uses of food system maps.  As a visualization tool, these maps have the ability to help community members, researchers, and political leaders better understand their local food system and the connections between them.

Developed by the Chautauqua County Department of Planning and Development, the map continues to grow with the help of partners and organizations within the food system.  The food system incorporates all of the steps that food takes – from growing in a field, to your dinner table, down to the waste your food creates. The food system includes all processes involved in keeping us fed: growing, harvesting, processing, packaging, aggregating, transporting, marketing, consuming, and disposing of food.  The Chautauqua County Food Policy Council helps to strengthen the local food system by bringing stakeholders together to identify and bridge gaps within it.
