MAYVILLE, N.Y.:-- Area residents looking for a little extra motivation to get or keep their exercise program going into the winter months will have more options. Two new walking programs, Walk with Ease and the Cool Walk Group, are planned for the Northwest Savings Bank Ice Arena in Jamestown.

Both programs will meet every Monday, Wednesday and Friday starting Wednesday, November 13, 2019.  The Cool Walkers will meet from 9:15 until 10 a.m., and Walk with Ease from 10:15 – 11:15 a.m.

Walk with Ease is a structured program designed for people with arthritis or other chronic conditions who might benefit from an introductory exercise program.  Walk with Ease is designed to safely and slowly build stamina and improve cardiovascular fitness.

Research has shown that participants who completed the Walk with Ease program increased their balance and strength and improved their overall well-being.  The program includes a short discussion time, warm-up, stretching, walking, and cool-down.   Program materials and incentive prizes are included. There is no charge for Walk with Ease, and Arena membership fees are waived for this grant-funded program.

Walk with Ease is led by a certified Walk with Ease instructor.  No previous fitness experience is required, but participants should be able to stand for up to 10 minutes at a time. Individuals with serious health conditions should always check with their healthcare provider before starting a new exercise program.

The Cool Walk Group is for individuals who are already walking regularly and able to walk for 20 minutes or more.  The Cool Walk Group will offer individualized coaching, exercise tips, and weekly incentive prizes.  The program is offered at no charge; but participants are asked to purchase a walking membership to the Arena.  Membership costs as little as $1 or less per session, and can be paid at the Arena front desk.

Pre-registration for both programs is required.  To register, or for more information, call Lisa Miller at the Chautauqua County Department of Health and Human Services at 716-753-4795, or email her at activecounty@co.chautauqua.ny.us.  Please leave your name, number, and a message indicating which program you plan to attend.

Walk with Ease is a partnership of the Chautauqua County Department of Health and Human Services, Chautauqua County Parks Department and the Chautauqua County Office for the Aging with support from the National Parks and Recreation Association.
