Get Vaccinated and Wear a Mask: Spread Holiday Cheer – Not COVID-19
MAYVILLE, N.Y.: – Statistics released for the week of December 12-18 by the Chautauqua County Health Department show a decrease in overall infections but continuing concern for lagging vaccination rates and serious illness in those not vaccinated against COVID-19.
“Forty percent of the eligible population in the County is not vaccinated but the unvaccinated account for nearly 70% of those hospitalized with COVID-19,” said Christine Schuyler, Public Health Director. “I’m very concerned that as people gather for the holidays, especially indoors, we’re going to see an even bigger surge in cases, hospitalizations, and deaths than we’re seeing after the Thanksgiving holiday.”
The Health Department adamantly reinforces a layered disease prevention strategy of getting vaccinated – including boosters, wearing masks, frequently washing hands, and staying home when ill. The NYS Health Commissioner’s Determination on Indoor Mask or Vaccine on December 10th solidified the mandate in indoor public places throughout the state in regulation.
“Similar to the Clean Indoor Air Act, businesses and other public venues are required to adhere to the determination and we’re confident they will do so as it is the right thing to do for the common good,” said Schuyler.
COVID-19 information including statistics, vaccination and testing options, resources for the public, businesses, and schools can be found on the COVID-19 pages on the County’s website at https://chqgov.com.
