Michelle Henry

Michelle Henry was appointed the County Historian in March 2000 and also served as the county's Record Management Coordinator until she retired in January 2023. Michelle had written several articles for local and state publications, including the New York State Archives Partnership Trust's Archives magazine and the Chautauqua County Historical Society's Timelines. Copies of some of the articles are available below.

Douglas H Shepard

Dr. Douglas H. Shepard, Ph.D. Recipient of the first Elial T. Foote Award, established during the County's 2011 bicentennial to recognize outstanding contributions in research, preservation and dissemination of Chautauqua County's history. Elial T. Foote was one of the county's first historians, and it is because of him that we know so much about the first decades of the county's settlement and development.

Lois and Norwood Barris

The second recipients of the Elial T. Foote Local History Award (2012) are Lois and Norwood Barris of Dunkirk. As founding members of the Chautauqua County Genealogical Society, the Barris' were instrumental in the publication of more than 50 books and CD's pertaining to Chautauqua County's history and genealogy, and served as newsletter editor for the society for many years.
