FORESTVILLE, NY – On Wednesday, an EF-1 tornado touched down in parts of northern Chautauqua County, causing significant damage but fortunately no injuries. As the community continues recovery efforts, residents are urged to stay informed, avoid contractor scams, and utilize local resources for assistance.

The National Weather Service Buffalo released an official report detailing the tornado event that occurred on July 10, 2024. Rated EF-1, the tornado had estimated peak winds of 110 mph, a path length of 3.0 miles, and a maximum width of 150 yards.

The tornado began in the Town of Arkwright at 12:06 PM ET and ended in the Town of Hanover at 12:14 PM ET. Damage included minor roof and tree damage along Henry Road in Arkwright, tree damage along Putnam, Zahm, and Bradigah Roads, and significant roofing damage on Gage Road. The most severe damage occurred along Prospect Road, where multiple structures experienced roof and wall failures, and a grove of hardwood trees was destroyed.

County Executive PJ Wendel expressed gratitude for the swift notifications of the storm and relief that there were no serious injuries.

“We are very fortunate that this tornado did not result in any fatalities or significant injuries,” said Wendel. “I want to thank our first responders and the community for their quick actions and resilience during this event.”

As residents begin the cleanup process, it’s important to always assess the area for hazards like downed power lines and sharp debris before starting cleanup. Wear protective gear, such as gloves and sturdy boots, to prevent injuries.

Furthermore, avoid overexertion by taking breaks and staying hydrated. Use tools properly, following all safety instructions. For complex or large projects, hire licensed professionals to ensure safety and prevent further damage.

The Chautauqua County Office for Aging Services reminds residents to be cautious of unsolicited contractors and verify their credentials. Specifically, the department is focused on preventing contractor scams, particularly among older residents.

Dr. MaryAnn Spanos, Director of the Office for Aging Services, warned, “Unfortunately, in these situations, the scammers come out. It’s crucial for our residents, especially older adults, to be vigilant and ensure they are working with reputable contractors. Our representatives at the NY Connects Hotline are available to answer questions about damages not covered by homeowners insurance and to help navigate to reliable contractors.”

Residents can reach the NY Connects Helpline at 716-753-4582 or visit chqgov.com/office-aging/NY-Connects for assistance and guidance.

Additionally, Chautauqua County Emergency Services encourages everyone to download their app and use the "Damage / Safety Report" feature to submit damage reports directly.

Emergency Services Director Noel Guttman emphasized the importance of collecting this data, stating, “Accurate damage reports are vital for our efforts to secure recovery funds and provide necessary assistance to our community. By submitting this information, residents can help us in our efforts to seek reimbursement and support.”
