MAYVILLE, N.Y. — The Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office and the Department of Mental Hygiene and Social Services are warning residents about a scam targeting Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients.

Officials say multiple reports have been received about fraudulent text messages claiming:

“We’ve deactivated your food benefits card. Call 888-421-6229 to restore its use.”

The message prompts recipients to provide their Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card number and PIN. Scammers then use this information to access and spend funds, which cannot be refunded under New York state guidelines.

Authorities caution residents against sharing their EBT card details over the phone, via text, or through email.

If you receive a suspicious message or need help with your SNAP benefits, contact your local social services office directly.
