Chautauqua County officials are honoring City of Dunkirk Police Chief David Ortolano for his extraordinary service and leadership upon his retirement on November 22, 2024, following more than three decades of dedicated law enforcement service.

Chief Ortolano began his distinguished law enforcement career in 1985 as a Patrolman with the Dunkirk Police Department. He earned the department’s first-ever promotion to Patrol Sergeant in 1997, was elevated to Lieutenant in 2000, and in February 2005, assumed the role of Chief of Police. Over nearly two decades as Chief, Ortolano has led the department with honor, integrity, and a steadfast commitment to public safety.

Throughout his tenure, Chief Ortolano championed community policing initiatives, including the creation of Neighborhood Watch and National Night Out programs, fostering stronger bonds between the police department and Dunkirk’s residents. His leadership emphasized quality of life improvements, ensuring public safety in the city’s neighborhoods, waterfront, and parks.

In addition to his local impact, Chief Ortolano co-founded the Chautauqua Fallen Heroes Fund, which provides essential support to the families of first responders who are killed or critically injured in the line of duty. He also served on the Chautauqua County Traffic Safety Board, further demonstrating his unwavering dedication to public service.

The commendation, issued jointly by County Executive Paul M. Wendel, Jr., Legislator Robert Bankoski (District 2), and Legislator Marcus Buchanan (District 1), recognizes Chief Ortolano’s many contributions to Dunkirk and Chautauqua County.
