MAYVILLE, NY - Residents across Chautauqua County joined together on May 8 to recognize Wear Green Day, a visible show of support for mental health awareness and a call to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health challenges.
Observed annually during Mental Health Awareness Month, Wear Green Day encourages individuals, schools, businesses, and organizations to wear green—the national color of mental health awareness—as a symbol of solidarity, hope, and commitment to wellness.
“Wearing green is more than just a gesture—it’s a sign that we stand with those facing mental health challenges and are committed to fostering a community of support and compassion,” said County Executive Paul M. Wendel Jr., who officially proclaimed May 8 as Wear Green Day in Chautauqua County. “I encourage all citizens, businesses, schools, organizations, and communities to take small steps that create a big impact by promoting mental wellness, standing against stigma, and building a culture of compassion, acceptance, and support for all.”
Today’s observance is part of a broader initiative throughout the month of May. County Executive Wendel has also proclaimed May 2025 as Mental Health Awareness Month, under the national theme “Small Steps, Big Impact,” which highlights how everyday actions—such as showing kindness, starting conversations, or seeking help—can create lasting positive change in mental health outcomes.
In addition, the county is observing Children’s Mental Health Acceptance Week from May 4 through May 10, spotlighting the importance of recognizing and addressing the mental health needs of children and adolescents. Wendel emphasized that promoting mental wellness early in life is critical to healthy development, academic success, and long-term well-being.
Chautauqua County’s leadership urges all residents to continue taking part in Mental Health Awareness Month by learning more about mental health, supporting one another, and embracing acceptance over stigma.
