County Executive Wendel Tours Chautauqua Lake with Local Leaders, CLA Officials

NORTH HARMONY, N.Y. — Chautauqua County Executive Paul M. Wendel Jr. joined local leaders and representatives from the Chautauqua Lake Association (CLA) for an on-the-water tour of Chautauqua Lake this week to examine early-season weed growth and review current lake management efforts.

The tour embarked from the Lady of the Lake Liberty Lighthouse in the Town of North Harmony. County Executive Wendel was joined by North Harmony Town Supervisor Rob Yates, Town Board Member Mike Pfeil, CLA Executive Director Doug Conroe, CLA President John Ford, and CLA Administrative and Community Services Manager Heather Nolan.

“As someone who prefers to see things firsthand, this was a valuable opportunity to get a real-time view of lake conditions, especially in areas like Ashville Bay and Hadley Bay,” said Wendel. “Understanding the state of macrophyte growth—what we commonly refer to as weeds—is essential as we consider early harvesting efforts.”

Following the tour, Wendel noted that weed growth appears to be behind schedule this year, likely due to a colder-than-usual winter and lower water temperatures this spring. The County has committed funding to support early harvesting and has an ongoing agreement with the CLA to help ensure timely lake maintenance.

“The County remains committed to proactive lake management, guided by data and collaboration,” Wendel added. “We had access to sonar and drone imagery today, giving us a clearer picture of what’s happening below the surface. It’s not just about reaction—it’s about informed action.”

The tour also included a visit to one of the Jefferson Project buoys, part of a scientific research initiative gathering real-time environmental data to support long-term lake health.

“Chautauqua Lake’s future relies on a multifaceted, unified approach,” Wendel said. “There’s no silver bullet, but through science, local partnerships, and community involvement, we continue to make progress. I’m grateful to our partners and especially to Supervisor Yates, who offered historical insight on the region and its stewardship.”

County Executive Wendel emphasized that the management of Chautauqua Lake remains a top priority and encouraged residents to stay engaged and informed.

“We’ll see you on the lake this summer,” he said.
