Chautauqua County Mourns the Loss of Former Emergency Services Director

MAYVILLE, NY – It is with profound sadness that Chautauqua County Executive Paul M. Wendel Jr. announces the passing of Charles L. Smith, the former and first full-time Director of Emergency Services, who answered his last alarm on Tuesday, July 2, 2024.

Chautauqua County Executive Wendel Jr. expressed his heartfelt condolences, saying, "It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we mourn the loss of Charles L. Smith, the former and first full-time Chautauqua County Director of Emergency Services. Smith’s unwavering dedication to our community’s safety, his tireless efforts in advancing and promoting the fire service and his pivotal role in the Chautauqua County Department of Emergency Services have left an indelible mark on our county. I extend my deepest sympathies to the Smith family during this difficult time. May his legacy of selfless service continue to inspire us all."

Reflecting on Charles Smith’s legacy, Noel Guttman, the current Director of Emergency Services stated, "Charles was not only a pioneer in our agency, but also, a dedicated leader whose vision and commitment laid the foundation for our emergency services community. On behalf of the entire emergency services team, I extend our heartfelt condolences to Charles's family and loved ones during this difficult time. His legacy will continue to inspire and guide us as we strive to uphold the standards of excellence he set forth. We are deeply grateful for his service."
