MAYVILLE, NY – With less than a week left until the much-anticipated April 8, 2024 Solar Eclipse, Chautauqua County is ramping up preparations to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all residents and visitors.
Building on previous announcements and initiatives, officials are emphasizing the importance of being adequately prepared for the celestial event.
"We are under a week away from the eclipse event, and being prepared is absolutely crucial. Whether you're planning to view the eclipse from your backyard or venture out to one of the designated viewing locations, taking necessary safety precautions is paramount," said Chautauqua County Emergency Services Director Noel Guttman.
Residents are urged to ensure that essential items such as food, water, gas, and prescription medications are readily available. Ahead of Monday, April 8, 2024 emergency response assets will be staged countywide and at the ready ahead of increased traffic from visitors.
"We understand the challenges that come with increased traffic during events like the eclipse. That's why Chautauqua County is working closely with law enforcement and transportation authorities to implement traffic control measures and offer alternative routes to ease congestion. Our advice to visitors is simple: 'come early and stay late.' By staggering arrivals, we hope to minimize traffic bottlenecks and ensure a smoother experience for everyone. And for our local residents, remember that you can enjoy the eclipse right from your backyard, eliminating the need for extensive travel," said Guttman.
Additionally, the County is distributing free eclipse glasses to residents and visitors, available for pickup at various locations across the county. These certified glasses provide essential eye protection during the eclipse, ensuring a safe viewing experience for all.
In light of the eclipse's potential impact on boating activities, Chautauqua County Emergency Services is reminding boaters to adhere to safety protocols.
"For those few minutes of darkness, boaters need to exercise caution and ensure they have proper lighting, life jackets, and navigational aids onboard," emphasizes Guttman.
Moreover, residents and visitors are encouraged to visit the official Chautauqua County website: chqgov.com/eclipse for comprehensive eclipse safety guidelines, including tips on traffic management, emergency preparedness, and viewing etiquette.
As Chautauqua County enters the final stretch before the 2024 Solar Eclipse, County Executive Paul M. Wendel Jr. expresses confidence in the community's readiness.
"Our collective efforts in preparing for this celestial event have been commendable. With just days remaining, let's continue to prioritize safety and cooperation to ensure a memorable and incident-free experience for everyone," said Wendel.
Last month it was announced that County Offices and services, except emergency and essential services, will close starting at noon on April 8, 2024.
