MAYVILLE, NY – As the highly anticipated 2024 Solar Eclipse approaches, Chautauqua County is taking a significant step to enhance public safety and enjoyment; announcing distribution of free solar glasses for residents and visitors.

In preparation for the celestial spectacle on April 8, 2024, Chautauqua County Government will provide free ISO 12312-2 certified solar glasses to ensure safe viewing of the solar eclipse. The distribution will commence on Tuesday, March 12, 2024, allowing residents and visitors ample time to acquire the necessary eyewear for the event.

“As we distribute solar glasses to our community, we emphasize the importance of eye safety during the upcoming solar eclipse,” said Noel Guttman, Director of Emergency Services, Chautauqua County. “This initiative aims to make safe viewing accessible to all, contributing to an enjoyable experience for residents and visitors alike.”

The safety of our community members is paramount. Looking directly at the sun during a solar eclipse without proper eye protection can cause severe eye damage. The distributed solar glasses adhere to international safety standards, offering the assurance needed for a secure viewing experience.

“The distribution of free solar glasses underscores our commitment to community safety and enjoyment during the 2024 Solar Eclipse,” said Paul M. Wendel Jr., Chautauqua County Executive. “I encourage everyone to take advantage of this opportunity and join us in celebrating this extraordinary celestial event responsibly.”
