MAYVILLE, NY — With heavy snowfall blanketing the region, Chautauqua County is urging residents to take action by clearing snow away from fire hydrants. Keeping hydrants accessible ensures firefighters can respond quickly in emergencies, potentially saving lives and property.
Local fire departments are working tirelessly this week to keep hydrants free of snow, but they cannot do it alone. Residents can make a significant difference by taking a few moments to clear snow from hydrants near their homes or businesses. This community effort will help improve public safety during this challenging weather.
“Seconds count during a fire,” said Chautauqua County Executive Paul M. Wendel Jr., who is also a volunteer firefighter. “Snow-covered hydrants can delay our ability to connect to a water source and can mean the difference between saving a home or business and losing it entirely. I urge everyone to pitch in and help keep hydrants visible and accessible.”
Chautauqua County Emergency Services Coordinator Noel M. Guttman emphasized the importance of shared responsibility during extreme weather conditions. “While fire departments are proactively working to clear hydrants, there are simply too many across the county for them to manage alone. Clearing a three-foot perimeter around a hydrant and ensuring it’s accessible from the street can make all the difference when seconds matter.”
The County encourages residents to:
- Clear snow from all sides of the hydrant, creating a three-foot radius around it.
- Ensure a clear path from the hydrant to the street.
- Check hydrants regularly after plows pass to ensure they remain visible.
When clearing hydrants, safety should always come first. Be mindful of passing traffic and wear bright or reflective clothing, especially at night, to ensure you're visible to drivers. Take breaks as needed and avoid overexertion while shoveling, as heavy snow can be physically demanding.
Clearing hydrants can also be a great group activity for families, neighbors, or friends. Working together not only lightens the load but also strengthens community bonds while keeping everyone safe.
Thank you for stepping up to support our community—when snow piles up, every shovelful counts in keeping our neighborhoods safe.
