Recognizing Children’s Mental Health Acceptance Week

Submitted by Justin Gould on

Chautauqua County is proud to recognize Children’s Mental Health Acceptance Week, May 4–10, 2025—a time to celebrate the resiliency and strength of children and youth.  Observed nationally and locally, the week emphasizes the importance of creating supportive communities where all children feel seen, heard, and supported.

As part of the week’s activities, Wear Green Day will be held on Thursday, May 8, encouraging residents to wear green in support of youth facing mental health challenges. Green is the color for mental health awareness and symbolizes new life, growth, and potential for recovery.

This year’s theme, “Small Steps. Big Impact.”, reminds us that even the simplest actions can make a meaningful difference. Here are a few ways families, caregivers, and community members in Chautauqua County can take small steps to support children’s mental wellness:

  • Start Conversations: Talk openly with children about their feelings. A small chat after school or at dinner can open the door to trust and emotional safety.
  • Encourage Expression: Let kids know it’s okay to feel big emotions. Art, journaling, or play can be great outlets.
  • Be a Mental Health Ally: Participate in Wear Green Day and share why mental health matters to you. Visibility leads to acceptance.
  • Connect to Resources: Explore support and programming through Chautauqua Tapestry, which helps families navigate local systems and services for youth mental health.
  • Model Self-Care: Children learn from watching adults. Practicing mindfulness, maintaining routines, and prioritizing wellness can have a lasting ripple effect.

Together, Chautauqua County can build a stronger, more resilient future—one small step at a time.
