This Veterans Day, Chautauqua County pauses to reflect on the tremendous sacrifices made by our veterans and the ongoing support available for them in our community.
Through various initiatives and dedicated programs, our county continues to prioritize the needs of those who have served. Here are some ways we support our veterans, both on this important day and throughout the year.
Veterans Services Agency
Gregory Carlson and his team at the Veteran Services Agency are the backbone of support for veterans in Chautauqua County. From assisting with accessing VA benefits to addressing post-traumatic stress disorder and managing compensation claims, Carlson’s team works diligently to offer personalized, one-on-one support. Each veteran is unique, and this team understands the complexities involved in transitioning from military service to civilian life. For those who served, their dedication does not end upon returning home—and for Carlson and his team, supporting our veterans is a daily mission.
Transportation Services
Transportation to necessary services is critical, especially in rural areas. For veterans who need to travel to the Buffalo VA Medical Center, Chautauqua County offers rides through CHQ Transit on Wednesdays and Fridays. Transportation remains a significant challenge for many veterans in our rural communities, and the county is actively exploring ways to expand this essential service to better meet the needs of our veterans. Every effort is being made to ensure they can access the care they deserve, regardless of location.
The Dwyer Veteran’s Program
The Dwyer Veteran’s Program has been a proud fixture in Chautauqua County since 2017. This initiative, lead by Cindy Reedy, fosters a sense of community and connection for veterans. Whether through the weekly coffee hour or the annual Dwyer Gala, the program is designed to create a welcoming and supportive environment for all veterans. For many, it provides a space to connect with others who understand their experiences. The Dwyer Program is more than a resource; it’s a community and a source of strength for veterans throughout Chautauqua County.
Veterans Wellness Fair
This past August, the Veterans Wellness Fair at the Celoron Legion brought together over 35 agencies dedicated to veteran health and wellness. With a particular focus on mental health and suicide prevention, the fair aimed to ensure that veterans have access to the comprehensive care they need. These fairs not only connect veterans to health services but also raise awareness about the importance of addressing mental health issues within the veteran community. The Wellness Fair exemplifies Chautauqua County's commitment to supporting veterans' overall well-being.
