Division of Correctional Health

Medical Services

In conformance with applicable Federal and New York State laws and regulations, medical services in the Chautauqua County Jail are implemented by the Public Health Division of the County’s Department of Health and Human Services with the Director of Health and Human Services serving as the Responsible Health Authority. The work of the Correctional Health staff is aligned with the mission of the Department of Health and Human Services that, in collaboration with our partners, we protect and promote the health, safety, and self-reliance of all those in Chautauqua County and provide essential human services, especially for those who are least able to help themselves.

Comprehensive medical and mental health services are provided by staff of the Department of Health and Human Services, County Mental Health Department and other local providers. Staff members consist of a part-time physician, a nurse practitioner, registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, health aide, licensed clinical social workers, a certified alcohol and substance abuse counselor, a care coordinator and administration. Specialty services are provided through various contracts. An important part of the Correctional Health program is identification of and counseling and treatment for community health priorities.

The mission of the Correctional Health program is to deliver holistic health care services with respect and caring to individuals detained in the custody of the Sheriff’s Office. The medical program ensures the provision of emergency, acute and basic medical/mental health care services to all inmates in a timely manner. We strive to prevent the spread of communicable and contagious diseases, prevent and treat chronic conditions, promote healthy behaviors, improve well-being and self-sufficiency and assist with linkages for success upon release.

Nursing staff screen each inmate prior to and/or shortly following admission. Screening is done for emergency, acute, and chronic medical and mental health needs.

Medical information will not be given to family or friends due to federal and state privacy laws. The patient may give medical information to family or friends.  Correctional Health staff accepts medical or mental health information and will follow up with the individual.
