Good Nutrition is at the core of good health especially for seniors who may be managing chronic health conditions. Office for the Aging's Senior Nutrition Programs provide meals and nutrition education to help ensure seniors are getting a balanced diet as well as socialization and support essential for healthy aging. The services include home delivered meals for the frail elderly or those recently discharged from the hospital; congregate meals & restaurant dining for anyone 60+; and dietitian consultation and health/nutrition education. Meal services are all available for a donation as we pair the funding we receive with donations to ensure everyone who needs a meal gets one. We encourage seniors who are unable to donate to apply for SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) as this benefit can be used toward the meal contribution in any of the OFA nutrition programs.
Congregate Dining Sites:
The purpose of the congregate meal program is to provide older Americans, particularly those with low incomes, with low cost, nutritionally balanced meals served in strategically located centers. Not only do seniors enjoy a tasty meal but have the opportunity to socialize and receive health promotion and nutritional education programs and information. Some meal sites have games or special events or exercise programs associated with them as well. Suggested contribution is $3.00 per meal for low income seniors. Reservations must be received 24 hours in advance. Sites are currently located in the following locations:
Sinclairville - Lakewood - Mayville - Findley Lake - Westfield - Brocton - Fredonia - Forestville.
Dining Out Restaurant Program:
As a part of the congregate program are several participating local restaurants where seniors can go and order off a special senior menu. Vouchers are obtained from the Mayville OFA office for a suggested contribution of $3.50. Diners must present the voucher prior to ordering their meals and are responsible for any gratuity. Contact OFA for further information.
**All participants in either Congregate Program must complete a participation Registration form.
Home Delivered Meals:
The home delivered meal program is done in collaboration with the Jamestown, Dunkirk- Fredonia and Sinclairville Meals on Wheels agencies. An in-home assessment is completed to determine eligibility and meals are then delivered directly to the home according to the needs of the client. Suggested Contribution is based on ability to pay. Sinclairville areas deliver hot meals on Monday, Wednesday and Friday only. Jamestown and Dunkirk deliver cold meals that need to be re-heated by the client in the home.
** All referrals for home delivered meals must be called into NY CONNECTS @ 753-4582, 363-4582 or 661-7582
Seniors can use their SNAP toward the meal contribution in any of the OFA nutrition programs.
Dietitian Consultation& Nutrition Education:
Menus for the nutrition programs are developed by our registered Dietician in accordance with USDA and other State & Federal nutrition guidelines. Our Dietitian also provides monthly nutrition education at our dining sites and is available to do individual or group counseling on any dietary concerns. Contact NY Connects to schedule an appointment.
Health Promotion:
An RN presents a health topic at each congregate site every other month and does a monthly article for the newspapers.
